Since you all know I’ve mounted a rescue mission for my wardrobe I thought I’d share a few things I’ve learned while keeping my food diary. One of the biggest is related to portion size. I think that is something American’s struggle with in general. I find I have a hard time judging the amount of any given item when I am away from home and don’t typically carry measuring cups and spoons with me. Frankly, I don’t know what one ounce looks like. So I searched for some other visuals to help guide me. You know, like a deck of cards equals a serving of meat. (It is really the only one I can ever remember.)
I thought this guide from Prevention Magazine was really nice since it is all based on your hand which is always with you.
Do you have any tricks for keeping portions in check while out and about?
There are many ways you could take this, for instance, maintaining a healthy weight is a great way to lower your risk for many health issues like diabetes and heart disease thereby increasing the likelihood you will live longer. I’m sure this is the healthy and smart way to look at things. I however I’m talking about the money I’ve invested in clothing over the years. My fashioniesta sisters out there know exactly what I am talking about. Over the years I have invested a pretty penny into my wardrobe and I’d like to continue to get good use of out of it.
I’m presently in the process of packing up my apartment for a move and so it is time to do a bit of spring cleaning, especially in the wardrobe area. I’m all for getting rid of clothing I don’t wear anymore because I don’t like it, it doesn’t fit right or it just isn’t me, but darn it all anyway if I am willing to part with a pair of beautiful, good condition, designer jeans just because I’ve put on a few happy relationship pounds. I’m not talking about a lot here and I’m all for the concept of dressing and loving the body you have not the body you want, but I think five to eight pounds would save me for parting with some pieces I absolutely love. I also promise that I’m presently at a healthy weight and that I still will be after this little rescue mission I plan to mount for my closet. I’m willing to do the work and I have a plan:
Running three days a week – including my new pre-run routine
Soccer one to two days a week
Yoga three days a week
Friday rest days – having Fridays as free days always makes me happy. It is also my typical weigh in day so a rest day is like a mini reward.
Myfitnesspal to keep track of the fruits, veggies, and whole grains I plan to eat
For me, making eating five or more servings of fruit and veggies a day my first priority and keepings track of my food so I don’t over indulge usually does the trick when it comes to lowering the number on the scale. Apparently I’m a bit of a carb lover. I’m especially fond of using myfitnesspal to track food and exercise because it makes it easy to track food on my phone wherever I am and it is totally free!

Well, this weekend was a success. I completed my long run Friday afternoon, picked up my bib for the upcoming Twilight 12K on Monday and then I made those lovely Honey, Lemon, Lavender Cupcakes I told you about. For the most part this recipe is made just like any other except the step where you make your own lavender sugar. Yum. And, while it sounds hard, it really just involves combining lavender and sugar in a food processor.
From there, you just mix your ingredients like normal and bake.
One thing I did notice was that the batter is very thick. I normally fill cupcake liners by pouring the batter out of a large measuring cup but this time I used two spoons and made little balls of batter (like you would with cookie dough) and filled the liners with them.
While the cupcakes were baking I mixed up the frosting and added some violet food coloring.
And, when all combined they looked like this.
I followed this tutorial to make the fluffy frosting flowers.
After enjoying one of these lovely cupcakes I took the dog on a very sunny relaxing run, just what we both needed. How was your long weekend?
